Transforming forestry waste into renewable energy with scalable, low-carbon solutions
ReSolve represents a compelling opportunity within Canada’s expanding clean-energy and industrial-decarbonization sector. The company has developed an integrated biorefinery and energy platform that transforms residual forestry biomass into three high-value renewable products: lignin-based low carbon pellets, second-generation ethanol, and renewable electricity.
Our first commercial facility will be built in Québec, one of the world’s leading clean-energy jurisdictions, and will benefit from a robust policy framework that supports renewable energy innovation and emissions reduction. The facility will be designed as a scalable, replicable model capable of expansion across the province of Québec, across Canada, and internationally. Its approach leverages abundant forestry biomass, established energy infrastructure and regional policy support, and favorable market conditions for renewable generation.
Operations are structured for stable and diversified revenue generation. This vertically integrated model provides multiple revenue streams, efficient resource utilization, and long-term growth potential in markets increasingly shaped by sustainability objectives and clean-energy demand.
Our lignin pellets provide an average calorific value of 27 gigajoules per tonne, making it comparable to high-grade coal. The pellets are designed for energy-intensive industries such as cement, steel, and aluminum production, where high-energy density and lower-emission energy sources are increasingly required. When used in place of fossil fuels, these pellets can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to ninety percent, contributing directly to industrial decarbonization initiatives.
The patent pending technology platform simultaneously produces second-generation ethanol (2G ethanol) from non-food biomass and each tonne of feedstock yields roughly 260 litres of ethanol. This advanced biofuel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86% compared to fossil fuels. Second-generation ethanol can be blended into gasoline under current and emerging standards. Government regulations currently require that 10% ethanol be blended into gasoline, with an increase to 15% by 2030.
ReSolve will operate an integrated biomass cogeneration unit that converts forestry residues into both steam and renewable electricity, providing reliable 24/7 baseload power to the Hydro-Québec grid. Unlike intermittent renewable sources such as solar or wind, cogeneration (combined heat and power) delivers a stable, dispatchable source of clean energy that supports continuous industrial operations and enhances regional energy security. Supplementing lignin pellet and second-generation ethanol production, each ten-megawatt cogeneration unit can generate over 80,000 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity per year, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions compared with fossil-fuel alternatives. The steam produced during the process is fully utilized within the biorefinery, eliminating any atmospheric release and avoiding external heating costs.
The biorefinery consumes only about 3% of the electricity generated, leaving a 97% surplus available for sale to Hydro-Québec’s power grid or through industrial off-take agreements—creating stable, utility-grade revenue streams supported by provincial policy frameworks.
